About Us2019-01-22T13:33:35+00:00

CrossFit Harrisonburg opened its doors in a warehouse space on the south side of town in April 2011.  In May  2012,  we moved to a 3,000 sq ft downtown space in the Urban Exchange building. Continued growth had us looking again, and in August  2016, we moved to our current location on East Market St.  with over 8,000 sq ft of awesome CrossFit space!

CrossFit Harrisonburg’s mission is to provide the best coaching within a safe, well-equipped facility and environment where every athlete is welcome. We strive to provide a community-driven atmosphere for our athletes of all ages and abilities. We support our athletes in reaching their goals, whether that be athletic, fitness, health or otherwise.

Garth Kunkle

Owner | Level 2 Trainer

I began CrossFitting in April 2011.  I was immediately drawn to the high-intensity functional movements. As a lifelong athlete, CrossFit was exactly what I had been seeking.
Power Cleans, Hang Cleans, Power Snatch, basically any barbell movement. I also love to row.
I love the sense of community we have at the box.  We not only exercise as a group, but some of my best friends are members of CrossFit Harrisonburg.
CrossFit has and continues to inspire me to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
Longevity! I started CrossFit when I was 44, now I’m 50, and I still want to be going when I’m 80!
I usually tell them that CrossFit can accommodate any and all fitness levels.  It has the flexibility to meet a participant at their level and allow them to grow as their fitness and competence grows.  Many people form their impression of CrossFit from what they see on TV during the CrossFit Games.  That is the most extreme variation of CrossFit designed to test the fittest individuals in the world. I tell new members to just get through the doors and give it a try.  We don’t bite!

November 2012. I was significantly overweight, out of shape and looking for something to help me reverse the trend of 40 years of neglect. I had a new smokin’ hot wife that was wearing me out and I needed more stamina.
Learning all of the different lifts that I had never done before and movements that I’d never tried before.
I’ve never stayed with any fitness approach for longer than a year and I’ve been CrossFitting for over 4 ½ years. When I miss a day at CFH, my day is not complete. The community, the people and the results of working every day continue to bring me back to set and reach new goals. You cannot find, in any other type of gym, athletes that all strive towards similar goals but want to make sure you get there as well. It has pushed me physically and mentally to do things that I didn’t think my body could do. I love my bros!

I began CrossFitting in November 2012 at the young age of 40 after hearing about it from Garth Kunkle, one of our other owners. I didn’t play sports as a child; I was a band geek and played the trumpet from 6th grade through my senior year of college (Marching Royal Duuuukes!!!). My husband and I had started working out at home together and running some 5k’s and mud runs. It sounded like something we’d enjoy so we gave it a try. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
The people! I look forward to walking through the doors each day to see who else is there and who I get to workout with that day. I have formed so many close friendships through CFH with people I wouldn’t have met any other way. We are truly a close community that supports each other through the good and the bad.
I am most proud of learning I’m capable of things I’d never even considered. I had never touched a barbell before starting with CrossFit Harrisonburg and now it’s something I look forward to the most each day. I’ve learned I can push my body to do things I didn’t think possible and achieve goals I would have never thought to set for myself. I’m also proud of how this has impacted my children’s lives. They are active and healthy and see that fitness is a goal for your whole life, not just when you’re in school.
To qualify for online qualifiers for the Masters’ division.
In so many ways! I’m healthier, love working out, love my body, love the people I work out with and became a small business owner because I love it so much.

Head Coach, Level 1 Trainer

I began Crossfit in the fall of 2015. I had been going to a typical gym for a little while before trying Crossfit and wasn’t seeing the results I was hoping for and needed to make. So I tried CFH one day and after that never turned back!

The Snatch is my favorite movement. It takes a lot of technique to do well in the movement and that kind of challenge is what I look for in movements.

The community atmosphere is the best aspect to CFH. I have met amazing people here and made the best friends I could have ever possibly hoped for in my life!

My least favorite is the front squat. I don’t mind it, just not the most exciting or comfortable movement.

Maria Hayden

Marketing Manager, Level 1 Trainer, CFH CrossFit Gymnastics coach

My 2 favorite movements in CrossFit are the snatch and the overhead squat. I love those movements because they are very technical and require a good amount of mobility, which are both aspects of training that I spend a lot of time on!
In my CrossFit journey, the thing I am most proud of is that I now prioritize quality over quantity. I focus on the little things, (such as a quality warm up and quality accessory work) to ensure that my training sessions are full of my best possible work. If this means that I don’t have time to do every planned part of my training, that’s okay because I’ve learned that quality is way more important than quantity!!!
One lifestyle change I’ve made because of CrossFit is improving my sleeping quality. I cannot perform my best when I do not sleep 8-9 hours a night, so I do my best to get in bed by 9:30pm and wake up between 6-6:30am. My sleep schedule before CrossFit was non-existent and I averaged around 6 hours, so it’s safe to say that I feel a lot better now!
I workout 5 days/week at CrossFit Harrisonburg and it’s the BEST part of my day 🙂

I began CrossFit when I was 13 years old in the 8th grade. After basketball season had ended and I needed something to do after school in the spring. I decided to try it because I had a gym super close to my house and I was looking for coaching and direction. Before that I was going to a regular globo gym, and had no idea what I was doing.
My favorite lift we do is the snatch for sure. I’m interested in anything very technical, that requires high levels of awareness, coordination, and speed or agility. I always used to be a long, slow distance type of person, but now I find a lot of gratification in mastering the toughest, explosive and technical movements I can find.
My favorite thing about CrossFit Harrisonburg is that we have something for anyone and everyone. We have a wide variety of coaches that can serve different people and their needs. We also have specialists in a lot of areas that can help the community grow in areas that other gyms don’t offer.
It has taught me to play the long game in life. Nothing that is worth chasing comes quickly or easily, and the things that are most gratifying take months or years to improve and find satisfaction. Some days aren’t going to go as planned, but consistency, and dedication day in and day out will take where you want. And one messed up day isn’t going to hurt you in the long run.

I started Crossfit in the spring of 2013. I found myself in a constant cycle of training for and running marathons and half marathons. It seemed never ending, and for me, unsustainable long term. Crossfit gave me the mix of strength and cardio that I was looking for along with a great feeling of community.
I am most proud of seeing a new athlete perform the Kip, Box Jumps or Handstand Pushups! There’s nothing more exciting than watching people succeed when previously they doubted their own ability!
The major CrossFit goal for me is to stay healthy. That’s a combination of eating clean, getting stronger and faster.
Crossfit has helped me adjust my mind’s frame of reference. (Spartan Up!, Joe De Sena). If you can convince your mind that you’re going to devote time to Crossfit everyday, and that you’re going to make it through the workout and get stronger, it changes how you view the rest of the other obstacles in your day.

I wish to one day reach the CrossFit Games level of competition.
I’ve learned the value of patience, hard work, and perseverance.
It’s now an outlet and source of community and friendship for me.
I train about 5 days a week.

I really like knowing my workouts are well planned and waiting for me each morning when I arrive, even if it’s a movement I’m not familiar with it’s exciting to work on new things and document the improvements over time.
Wall Walks- No reason, just don’t like them!
Through CrossFit I have realized that nutrition is not just a huge part of being healthy but also that top fuel rewards you with top performance. As I change my eating habits, I continue to see improvements in my workouts. Enter the Zone!!
Anyone can do CrossFit! The people that you see that may intimidate you did not just start CrossFit, they are a result of CrossFit. Stop in and ask them about their journey, you may be surprised at what you hear. Everyone is welcome here at CFH and the CFH community is excited to meet you! The CFH family will make you feel like you have always been a part of this box, even if it is your first time trying CrossFit.
Aside from getting an intense workout every morning, I love to workout with the group of people at CFH. We have an awesome group here and they have become close to me in many ways. Whether pairing up for a partner WOD, running a weekend race or just meeting up for some social time we always have a good time and find something to laugh at. As a coach, I enjoy being part of the CFH Team and being able to coach what I love is very satisfying to me.

I am most proud of how much I have learned from my CrossFit mentors, and how I am now able to use that knowledge to help others. I believe that everyone can find something that they enjoy to keep them healthy, and I am so proud that I get to help people find that for themselves. So many coaches have made significant impacts on my life and leadership style, and I hope to one day have that effect on another athlete.
CrossFit has taught me more about myself than I ever expected the first time I walked into a gym. CrossFit makes you physically stronger and more prepared for life, but it also makes you mentally strong. I have learned that my body is capable of so much more than I ever thought and that your mind will quit long before your body is ready to quit. I have learned to push myself and help others do the same through CrossFit and the community I have become a part of.
I have learned to listen to my body. I learned how to fuel myself for workouts and everyday life by dialing in my nutrition and learning what works well with my body and what doesn’t. I have learned to prioritize sleep and recovery so I can get up and give every day my best self.
Just get yourself in the door! That first class may be scary, but nothing worthwhile comes without a risk! At CFH, everyone is there to help you succeed at your goals, no matter what they may be. CrossFit can be perfectly catered to anyone, regardless of their current fitness level, lifestyle, or motivation. Become a part of the community, and you’ll get a little fitter along the way!

I began CrossFit at the beginning of my junior year of High school.

I never really worked out before CrossFit with the exception of running occasionally. Once I started CrossFit, I fell in love with working out, and now it is something I try to do at least 5-6 days a week.

The HARDEST thing you can do at CrossFit is walk through the front door. Everything after that is a piece of cake.

Level 2 Trainer, CrossFit Endurance

One of my Goals is to finish an Ironman. Although it is not CrossFit, my goal is being accomplished with the help of CrossFit. CrossFit allows me to keep my entire body ready to put in longer hours endurance work. I can also keep it more flexible with the stretching while also building strength with weights and gymnastic movements. This is why CrossFit is an important part of my goal.
I Love Working out to Hard Rock Music
Favorite Post workout snack is definitely a FitAid and Some Haribo Gummy Bears.

Tori Ruckman

Level 2 Trainer, CrossFit Kids

I started CrossFit in Summer of 2012. I had seen the CrossFit Games being replayed on TV and of course it sparked my interest seeing women so fit. It quickly became my number one hobby and grew to be a huge impact in my life. I changed my normal workout routine to be CrossFit, changed my nutrition and made some of the best friends.
My favorite lift in CrossFit is the snatch. The technical aspects of this make it so interesting. You have to focus on each part of the movement and once it all clicks, wow!
I am most proud of what I have learned my body and mind can accomplish if you stick to the plan and aim for your goals. CrossFit for me quickly turned into not just a hobby but a sport. Each day is a learning experience as to what your body can do and with that you have to overcome what your mind tells you otherwise. I never imagined I would be picking up a barbell that weighed 355 pounds but when I maxed out on deadlift I did just that!
The biggest lifestyle change or me was my nutrition. For years I had worked out so that I could eat what I wanted without any regrets. Once I became competitive in CrossFit I quickly learned I could not do that if I wanted to be successful so I hired a nutrition coach and got in the best shape of my life! This made such a huge impact on me that I am now taking classes to become a registered dietitian so I can help others reach their goals!

CrossFit is for everyone, no matter your age or athletic background.  It truly teaches functional movements, which will help any person lead a better life.
Our CrossFit members are regular people.  99% of CrossFit athletes are not the CrossFit Games athletes you see on TV.  We are a variety of ages, from teenagers and middle school athletes, up to folks in their 70s, and everything in between.  We are students, employees, business owners, moms, dads, and grandparents. Above all, CFH is welcoming to everyone.  So give it a try.  I bet you will like the people, as well as how great you feel after a workout.
The people. I have met people through CFH that I otherwise would not have crossed paths with, and made some of my closest friends through this gym.  A CrossFit workout is different than working out at a regular gym.  Everyone is doing the same workout (scaled to a person’s individual ability). This generates a feeling of “we are all in this together” that results in great support for each other.
