About Us2018-12-10T10:29:21+00:00

CrossFit Harrisonburg opened its doors in a warehouse space on the south side of town in April 2011.  In May  2012,  we moved to a 3,000 sq ft downtown space in the Urban Exchange building. Continued growth had us looking again, and in August  2016, we moved to our current location on East Market St.  with over 8,000 sq ft of awesome CrossFit space!

CrossFit Harrisonburg’s mission is to provide the best coaching within a safe, well-equipped facility and environment where every athlete is welcome. We strive to provide a community-driven atmosphere for our athletes of all ages and abilities. We support our athletes in reaching their goals, whether that be athletic, fitness, health or otherwise.

Owner | Level 2 Trainer

I began CrossFitting in April 2011.  I was immediately drawn to the high-intensity functional movements. As a lifelong athlete, CrossFit was exactly what I had been seeking.
Power Cleans, Hang Cleans, Power Snatch, basically any barbell movement. I also love to row.
I love the sense of community we have at the box.  We not only exercise as a group, but some of my best friends are members of CrossFit Harrisonburg.
CrossFit has and continues to inspire me to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
Longevity! I started CrossFit when I was 44, now I’m 50, and I still want to be going when I’m 80!
I usually tell them that CrossFit can accommodate any and all fitness levels.  It has the flexibility to meet a participant at their level and allow them to grow as their fitness and competence grows.  Many people form their impression of CrossFit from what they see on TV during the CrossFit Games.  That is the most extreme variation of CrossFit designed to test the fittest individuals in the world. I tell new members to just get through the doors and give it a try.  We don’t bite!

November 2012. I was significantly overweight, out of shape and looking for something to help me reverse the trend of 40 years of neglect. I had a new smokin’ hot wife that was wearing me out and I needed more stamina.
Learning all of the different lifts that I had never done before and movements that I’d never tried before.
I’ve never stayed with any fitness approach for longer than a year and I’ve been CrossFitting for over 4 ½ years. When I miss a day at CFH, my day is not complete. The community, the people and the results of working every day continue to bring me back to set and reach new goals. You cannot find, in any other type of gym, athletes that all strive towards similar goals but want to make sure you get there as well. It has pushed me physically and mentally to do things that I didn’t think my body could do. I love my bros!

I began CrossFitting in November 2012 at the young age of 40 after hearing about it from Garth Kunkle, one of our other owners. I didn’t play sports as a child; I was a band geek and played the trumpet from 6th grade through my senior year of college (Marching Royal Duuuukes!!!). My husband and I had started working out at home together and running some 5k’s and mud runs. It sounded like something we’d enjoy so we gave it a try. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
The people! I look forward to walking through the doors each day to see who else is there and who I get to workout with that day. I have formed so many close friendships through CFH with people I wouldn’t have met any other way. We are truly a close community that supports each other through the good and the bad.
I am most proud of learning I’m capable of things I’d never even considered. I had never touched a barbell before starting with CrossFit Harrisonburg and now it’s something I look forward to the most each day. I’ve learned I can push my body to do things I didn’t think possible and achieve goals I would have never thought to set for myself. I’m also proud of how this has impacted my children’s lives. They are active and healthy and see that fitness is a goal for your whole life, not just when you’re in school.
To qualify for online qualifiers for the Masters’ division.
In so many ways! I’m healthier, love working out, love my body, love the people I work out with and became a small business owner because I love it so much.

Growing up, I was involved in every kind of sport you could think of. I competed in baseball, basketball, golf, football. I was on the Golf team in college and played professionally after college. Sports gave me that adrenaline rush, community atmosphere, and daily motivation that I craved. After deciding to stop playing golf professionally, I realized it was the first time I was not competing in a sport. Everything felt different. I still stayed active and would go to the gym on a daily basis, but it was not the same… I was always so bored and wanted something more. At the beginning of summer 2012, I decided to join CrossFit Harrisonburg; I was hooked immediately.

The key lifestyle change for me has been nutrition. I did not eat healthy when I started CrossFit and now I realize how much of an impact it has on your life and your performance at the gym. This has been key to my progress with CrossFit. They are not kidding when they say abs are made in the kitchen! It is like a daily science experiment with your body figuring out what works best to fuel you properly not only for CrossFit but for life.
The community! Yes, I know you hear that often but it is no joke. The friendships I have formed from being a part of this gym are amazing. I have met some of my best friends and meet new people almost weekly. Everyone is genuinely nice and supports everyone equally; whether they are there to just break a sweat for the day or they are training on a crazy goal!
Well, I like all food but my favorite post-workout drink is a shake that contains: coconut water, vanilla protein powder, and cinnamon. This concoction tastes like the milk of cinnamon toast crunch, which sadly I do not eat anymore! If I am going to eat some food pre or post-workout, it would be some yummy protein pancakes, just plain!
One of my goals is to one day be competing at CrossFit Regionals.

I started Crossfit in the spring of 2013. I found myself in a constant cycle of training for and running marathons and half marathons. It seemed never ending, and for me, unsustainable long term. Crossfit gave me the mix of strength and cardio that I was looking for along with a great feeling of community.
I am most proud of seeing a new athlete perform the Kip, Box Jumps or Handstand Pushups! There’s nothing more exciting than watching people succeed when previously they doubted their own ability!
The major CrossFit goal for me is to stay healthy. That’s a combination of eating clean, getting stronger and faster.
Crossfit has helped me adjust my mind’s frame of reference. (Spartan Up!, Joe De Sena). If you can convince your mind that you’re going to devote time to Crossfit everyday, and that you’re going to make it through the workout and get stronger, it changes how you view the rest of the other obstacles in your day.

I wish to one day reach the CrossFit Games level of competition.
I’ve learned the value of patience, hard work, and perseverance.
It’s now an outlet and source of community and friendship for me.
I train about 5 days a week.

I began CrossFit at the beginning of my junior year of High school.

I never really worked out before CrossFit with the exception of running occasionally. Once I started CrossFit, I fell in love with working out, and now it is something I try to do at least 5-6 days a week.

The HARDEST thing you can do at CrossFit is walk through the front door. Everything after that is a piece of cake.

CrossFit is for everyone, no matter your age or athletic background.  It truly teaches functional movements, which will help any person lead a better life.
Our CrossFit members are regular people.  99% of CrossFit athletes are not the CrossFit Games athletes you see on TV.  We are a variety of ages, from teenagers and middle school athletes, up to folks in their 70s, and everything in between.  We are students, employees, business owners, moms, dads, and grandparents. Above all, CFH is welcoming to everyone.  So give it a try.  I bet you will like the people, as well as how great you feel after a workout.
The people. I have met people through CFH that I otherwise would not have crossed paths with, and made some of my closest friends through this gym.  A CrossFit workout is different than working out at a regular gym.  Everyone is doing the same workout (scaled to a person’s individual ability). This generates a feeling of “we are all in this together” that results in great support for each other.
